Old Semeil have released our debut album 'Lessons Of The Rope'. Recorded live mid October 2020, in a 130 year old milking shed. The albums 8 songs, recorded by local producer Michael Josephson, bring out themes of home and dislocation. Exploring narratives of connection with ideals and place, of community. Songwriter and lyricist Gavin Cook explores these themes of leaving (a native of the British Isles), the layers of social strata that make up a place, not least colonialism and his part in the ongoing dynamic of colonialism in his adopted home.

'There's a lot in there, in these jumbled up stories I've sewn together, bits and pieces from all kinds of places. Perhaps it's natural that my version of events is mine and mine alone. Leaving space for others interpretation has always been on my mind'. 'The themes can be adopted into a myriad of situations, for instance, if I say, 'I miss you', I could be talking to my lover, my country, my body, my gods'.

Conversational, fragmented, stylistically diverse and unashamedly sentimental, 'Lessons Of The Rope' is an introduction to Old Semeil as a band.
Recorded live over 2 days to catch the sound of four people interacting, finding each other, part caressing, part wrangling these songs in.
